This inaugural season is a celebration of NOLA Contemporary Ballet’s formation. Join us this season as we present original works that embody and preserve the unique beauty and culture of Louisiana.
Kicking off the 2021 inaugural season is Premiere, a mixed rep show featuring world premieres and excerpts from an array of dance works in NOLA Contemporary Ballet’s repertory. NOLA-bred and inspired artists lead Louisiana-flavored, creative collaborations as the extraordinary NOLA CB dancers evoke the spirit of Louisiana in this first program of the season.

Premiere is a mixed rep show featuring world premieres and excerpts from an array of dance works in NOLA Contemporary Ballet’s repertory. It features artistic director, Tianna Pourciau Sykes’ Ghosts of the Past, excerpts from Suite Orleans, the world premiere of Requiem, as well as a sneak peek of the full-length production, Native Swamp.

A chronological homage to the history and culture of New Orleans, Suite Orleans subtly examines ideas of culture, history and identity, as well as the impact of cultural displacement. Suite Orleans engages a new vocabulary for southern choreographic storytelling as it celebrates the unique city of New Orleans and its impact on American culture. The work pushes the boundaries of dance to create a multi-media experience of rich text and spoken word, visual imagery and live music. Through a collaborative artistic process that combines the art forms of dance, music, and theatre, the performers of Suite Orleans reflect the synthesis of Afro-Caribbean and European culture that is the heart and soul of New Orleans. Suite Orleans displays historical content through a contemporary lens and is a dance theatre experience interwoven with the essence of New Orleans’ rich history and culture.

A work in four movements, Ghosts of the Past reflects the haunted history and supernatural nature that is ingrained in South Louisiana culture. Through a blending of contemporary ballet and modern movement vocabularies, the work explores the idea of inner reconciliation between the past, present and the future.
Through a true multimedia experience, NOLA CB dancers explore the depths of the swamp and the rich landscape that holds all of Louisiana’s history.

“Louisiana wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate—every 38 minutes, we lose the equivalent of a football field...The Louisiana wetlands are not only beautiful but functional as they reduce storm damage and coastal erosion, and also provide one of the most productive ecosystems on earth.” ~Audubon Nature Institute
